IDENTIFY

When I had the opportunity to work with the renowned Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), I knew it was crucial to fully understand the story we were about to tell. The project we were tasked with was nothing short of ambitious: visually explaining how our oceans can help sequester carbon to combat climate change. This wasn’t just a typical website design. EDF needed a landing page and a show booth—two dynamic tools to communicate complex scientific concepts in an engaging and educational way to the general public.

Research

The research phase of this project proved to be both challenging and inspiring. The concept itself was scientific and technical, requiring a deep dive into understanding how the oceans play a role in carbon sequestration. Beyond grasping the science, I also needed to find the right visual language to make this topic accessible and compelling. I scoured for videography that could bring this narrative to life and, in the end, turned to National Geographic and their ability to present nature’s wonders with stunning visuals and educational impact. Their web presence became a key influence on how we would present the story effectively, balancing both beauty and science.

EXECUTION

When it came to execution, the process was both exciting and demanding. Working alongside a talented developer, I focused on creating an interactive experience that would allow users to immerse themselves in the oceanic world of carbon sequestration. I envisioned an experience where users could "dive" into the ocean step-by-step, guided by video and audio elements that took them deeper into the story. Throughout the design process, I had to be mindful of factors like accessibility, file sizes, responsiveness, and how the website would perform on older devices. The result was a powerful and engaging piece of literature for EDF—one that not only conveyed critical information but also captivated users and invited them to engage in the topic in an experiential way.
